History of MWC Event

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) a globally renowned connectivity event, has a fascinating history that traces back to a business conference on “Pan Europe Digital Cellular Radio” held in Brussels in 1987.

During this conference, the original working name of the GSM mobile system was discussed. The event was initially known as the “GSM World Congress” and made its debut in 1990 when it was hosted in Rome.

Since then, the MWC has evolved into a premier gathering for thought leaders, industry experts, and innovators in the mobile ecosystem.

In 2006 the MWC found its permanent home in Barcelona, Spain where it has been held annually between the months of February and March.

The exception was in 2021 when the event was rescheduled to late June and early July due to the global pandemic.

Unfortunately, the 2020 edition had to be canceled altogether due to the pandemic.

Over the years, attendance at the MWC has grown significantly. The record was set in 2019 with 109,000 attendees, surpassing the 100,000 mark for the first time.

However, post-pandemic editions saw lower numbers, especially in 2021, with only 20,000 attendees.

Despite these challenges, the MWC remains a vital platform for companies like Telefónica, which showcase countless projects, demonstrations, and innovative solutions during the event.

As we look ahead, the forecast for 2024 anticipates approximately 95,000 visitors to Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress, reaffirming its status as the largest and most influential connectivity event worldwide.

The MWC continues to shape the future of mobile technology, bringing together industry leaders and visionaries to explore the latest trends and breakthroughs in this dynamic field.
